Planning your trip
Is Mathura the same as Vrindavan?
No — they're separate towns about 11 km apart. Mathura is the birthplace, centered on Krishna Janmabhoomi. Vrindavan is where Krishna spent his childhood, home to Banke Bihari and ISKCON. See our Mathura to Vrindavan guide for how to combine both.
How many days do I need in Mathura?
A rushed day trip covers the essentials. Two days lets you add Vrindavan properly. Three or more lets you reach Govardhan and Gokul without racing the clock. See our 1-day itinerary for a realistic breakdown.
What is the best time of year to visit?
November to February has the most comfortable weather. For festival energy, plan around Janmashtami (Aug–Sep) or Lathmar Holi (March) instead. Full reasoning in our Best Time to Visit guide.
Can I visit Mathura as a day trip from Delhi or Agra?
Yes. Mathura is about 2–2.5 hours from Delhi by train and under an hour from Agra by road — a common add-on to a Delhi–Agra itinerary. See How to Reach Mathura.
Do I need a guide to visit Mathura's temples?
No, a guide isn't required — the main temples are accessible independently and this site is built to cover what a guide would tell you. A local guide can help if you want deeper ritual context or a faster route through crowds during festivals.
Temples & etiquette
Are phones and cameras allowed inside the temples?
It varies by temple. Krishna Janmabhoomi and several inner sanctums ban phones and cameras entirely; others allow them. Always check at the entrance before joining a queue — see our Janmabhoomi guide for specifics.
What should I wear to visit the temples?
Shoulders and knees covered at all temples, and shoes off before entering — carry a bag for them or use the counters provided. See our Travel Guide for full etiquette notes.
Why is security so strict at Krishna Janmabhoomi specifically?
The site sits adjacent to the Shahi Eidgah mosque, making it one of India's most legally and politically sensitive religious sites. This shows up mainly as heavier security screening and checkpoints — see our dedicated guide for what to expect.
Is Banke Bihari Temple's curtain tradition real?
Yes — the curtains genuinely open and close every few minutes throughout the day, by long-standing tradition. Devotees believe the deity's direct gaze is too intense for continuous viewing. More in our Banke Bihari guide.
Festivals & timing
When is Janmashtami in 2026 and 2027?
September 4, 2026 (Smarta observance) and August 25, 2027. See our dated 2026 and 2027 event pages, and confirm locally as your date approaches since lunar calendar dates can shift by a day.
What is Lathmar Holi and when does it happen?
A week before national Holi, women in Barsana ceremonially beat men with sticks to reenact Radha's teasing of Krishna. It's the single most famous week to visit — see our festival calendar for specific dates.
Should I avoid visiting during festivals?
Not necessarily — festivals are when Mathura is most alive, but also most crowded and expensive. If you want a calmer trip, avoid Janmashtami and Holi week specifically; otherwise, book well ahead and expect intensity.
Food & money
Is Mathura safe to eat street food in?
With reasonable judgment, yes. Look for stalls with high local turnover and food cooked fresh in front of you. See our local food guide for how to judge a good sweet shop or street stall.
What should I definitely try eating in Mathura?
Mathura ke Pede (the town's signature milk sweet), kachori-sabzi for breakfast, and evening chaat near Vishram Ghat. Full list in Where to Eat.
How much does a Mathura trip cost?
It depends heavily on travel style — a shoestring day trip costs far less than a comfortable multi-day stay with private transport. See our budget breakdown for real ranges across three tiers.
Do vendors and rickshaws accept cards?
Rarely, especially in the old town. Carry small cash denominations — many ghat vendors, small temple donation boxes, and rickshaw drivers are cash-only.
Safety & practicalities
Is Mathura safe for solo and international travelers?
Mathura is a well-established pilgrimage town used to visitors of all backgrounds, though it gets crowded and chaotic during major festivals. Standard India travel precautions apply — see our travel tips.
What's the deal with the monkeys near the temples?
Rhesus macaques are common near ghats and temples and will grab food, bags, or shiny objects if given the chance. Don't feed or provoke them, and keep food out of sight when walking through their territory.
Is tap water safe to drink in Mathura?
No — stick to sealed bottled water or use a filter bottle/purification tablets. This is standard travel advice for most of India, not specific to Mathura.
