Where to stay
Hotels in Mathura
A guide to the kinds of stays available and which areas make sense — not a fabricated list of specific properties.
A note on this page
We deliberately don't list specific hotels with prices here — that kind of information goes stale fast and we'd rather not send you to a place based on a rate or a rating we haven't verified ourselves. Use a booking platform for live prices and availability, and treat what follows as a guide to what to look for.
Types of stay
Dharamshalas
Pilgrim guesthouses, often run by temple trusts or community associations. Very cheap, basic, and usually close to the main temple areas. Some restrict stays to a few nights during festival season.
Mid-range hotels
Standard business-hotel-style options exist near the railway station and along the main roads into town, with A/C, private bathrooms, and restaurants attached.
Ashram stays
Several ashrams in Vrindavan accept paying guests, often with a more devotional daily rhythm — early aarti, simple vegetarian meals, sometimes a requested donation instead of a fixed rate.
Agra as a base
Some travelers stay in Agra (under an hour away) for its wider hotel range and visit Mathura as a day trip, especially if pairing with the Taj Mahal.
Where to look
Staying near Vishram Ghat or the Dwarkadhish temple puts you within walking distance of the old town's main sites but in its narrowest, busiest lanes. Areas nearer the railway station or the Delhi–Agra road are quieter and better for cars, at the cost of a rickshaw ride into the temple core.
Booking timing
For Janmashtami and the Holi week, book as early as you can — see the events calendar for exact timing each year. Outside festival season, same-day or next-day booking is usually fine.
