How to Reach Mathura

Rail, road, and air — with the honest trade-offs of each, not just a list of options.

By train — usually the best option

Mathura Junction sits directly on the Delhi–Mumbai main line, making it one of the best-connected mid-sized stations in India. Trains from Delhi take roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, and frequency is high enough that booking a day or two ahead is normally sufficient outside major festival periods. This is the recommended option for most travelers coming from Delhi.

By road — flexible, faster from Agra

The Yamuna Expressway connects Delhi to Mathura in about 3 hours by car — slightly longer than the train but door-to-door, which matters if you're carrying luggage or traveling with a group. From Agra, Mathura is under an hour by road, making a car or shared taxi the practical choice for that specific leg.

By air — via Agra or Delhi

Mathura has no commercial airport. Agra's airport, about 55 km away, has limited domestic connections; most travelers instead fly into Delhi and continue by train or road. Factor the additional 2–3 hours of ground travel into any air-based itinerary.

Getting around once you're there

The old town's lanes near Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish are often too narrow for cars, so auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws do most of the local work. Shared taxis and buses connect Mathura to Vrindavan (see our dedicated guide), Govardhan, and Gokul.

Which option should you actually pick?

Coming from Delhi with no strict schedule: train. Coming from Agra, or traveling with a lot of luggage: car or taxi. Flying internationally: land in Delhi, don't try to route through Agra unless you already have a reason to be there.
