Restaurants & Food in Mathura
What to order, not where exactly to order it — the categories below hold up better than any specific list.
Mathura's food is built for people walking between temples all day — sweet, fast, and vegetarian by default. Very little of it is fine dining; most of the best food here is a stall or a sweet shop, not a restaurant with a menu.
What to order
Mathura ke Pede
The town's signature milk sweet, sold by weight in shops that have specialized in nothing else for generations. This is the one souvenir worth carrying home.
Kachori-sabzi
A breakfast standard: fried lentil kachori with spiced potato curry, usually eaten standing at a stall.
Rabri & lassi
Thick, chilled, and everywhere near the ghats in summer — a good way to cool down between temple visits.
Ghat-side chaat
Evening stalls near Vishram Ghat open right as the aarti crowd arrives — papdi chaat, aloo tikki, and bhel are all common.
Thali meals
Simple, filling vegetarian thalis are the default lunch option in the old town — cheap, fast, and usually unlimited on the roti and dal.
A note on where, exactly
We're holding off on naming specific shops until we can verify current details ourselves — a wrong address or a shop that's since closed does more harm than a missing recommendation. If you run a food business in Mathura, our Directory will be the place for verified listings.
